Re: CSS (Critical Swim Speed)

Atilla, Hi, I assessed my CSS the other day. 6:47 - 3: 15 -> 1:46 (33m pool) This was after a period when my weekly 4/5 times average (2.5-3k/sessions) training frequency dropped to 2/3 due to holidays, summer laziness etc. This is telling you about my fitness level and technique .... (I am 47, star...

Too bad about the swim portion MikeA, but it sounds like you had a memorable experience.

Re: After first 4 weeks following SS, this is what I look like..

Thanks for the encouraging words! I actually do exhale consistently during the swim....in fact, I may be guilty of exhaling too much too soon and losing buoyancy in the chest...especially when breathing to the left, I often get half a mouthful of water so I instinctively blow that out right when I ...

Re: After first 4 weeks following SS, this is what I look like..

drtse, For 1 month of swimming you are right on track. Stick to the bambino drills and you will progress rapidly. I think you are spot on with your assessment. Do the exhalation drills that SS prescribes. Although I can't see it you are probably holding your breath while your head is down. Proper br...

Re: Swims, races, or other plans for 2014

Race weekend coming up the Sprint Tri and I'm picking up the pieces.... May 28th was in a bike crash with a goddess in a Mercedes @ 40km/h. ("Are you OK, are you OK??" ). Whiplash, concussion and pulled my back. Carbon bike is a write-off, wheel set crunched. I took a hit. And I have not ...

Re: Swims, races, or other plans for 2014

Well, first tri is out of the way. It was in a pool and my time was 15:49 this include getting out of the pool and get going over the timing mat outside the building. Happy overall but it seems that as soon as the horn went off, I just started to spin my arms and forgot everything I worked on over ...

Re: 2 beat kick question

Gosh I would really like to be at that rate. And I wish I could get more distance per stroke and make the stroke rate pay better dividends! But a longer, slower stroke doesn't seem to work for me. When I was first getting to grips with freestyle (and majorly overgliding!) I was around the 55spm mar...

Re: 2 beat kick question

Re: 2 beat kick question

I have a high stroke rate (72) and people seem to say that once you get it, the 2 BK is so awesome. Very similar to me - I'm around 72-75 spm, depending on the distance. I can't even maintain a 6bk for any length of time at that tempo. I'm guessing that once you get to grips with 2bk you won't look...

Re: 2 beat kick question

jenniferLH, I have learnt 2bk on my own so not sure if it is exactly correct but when I spear in with my left hand I kick with my right leg. This helps me rotate my rt hip up and lets my rt hand clear the hip. Then as my rt hand spears I kick my lt leg. So I linked the thought process and action to ...

Re: Swims, races, or other plans for 2014

Well done Karl. A great swim and a great achievement. The facebook page was great to check out as well. Good to see you followed the MSF rules. And what a great TV interview. My plans for 2014/15? Well here downunder the open water season won't start again until October/November. So for the moment ...

Re: Swims, races, or other plans for 2014

Thanks Mike. How's your prep for the triathlon coming? I'm still having knee problems so it's the running that's worrying me - haven't trained properly since February. After 3 months of swimming pullbuoy-only I am swimming full stroke now, and finding I'm quite a bit slower than with the pull. Mayb...

Re: Breathing issues

Colleentaylor79 You should definitely breathe to both sides. Successful OWS is partly about being able to adjust your stroke to the conditions. You have to be able to breath to either side. Sometimes the waves roll over you in such a way that your limited to a particular side. Also, symmetry, and ef...

Re: Swims, races, or other plans for 2014

Well just finished the swim to Horn Island and back. 13.9 miles, 8:00:03 hours. Great weather and team. No marine animals to bother me. Absolutely no jellies lots of dolphins in pods but I didn't see them. The closest encounter I'm told was a blue crab that swam by me. Check out the marathonswimmers...

Re: Too Late To Swim Competitively

Hi, I am 22 years old and have no experience whatsoever with club swimming. I have a pretty good technique and my times are relatively fast for all strokes considering my lack of teaching/coaching. I really wish I had stuck in at swimming as a child because I have developed such a love for the spor...

Re: OK time to fix my pull

And yet. Ask anyone having a CSS pace of 1:30/100m to try to swim at 1:50/100m using any pulling way or style, including the flawed ones, and they'll fail (they'll endup faster than 1:50). I think I could demonstrate this when I have time, and my CSS is usually around 1:35 when totally unfit. I cou...

Re: need some advice, video

Breizh, To me it looks as though your arms need to bend at the elbow more. I see in your last clip at about 1 minute that the hands enter the water and continue down straight arm for 1 1/2 feet or so. Notice that the elbows don't break allowing the hand and forearm to move water back along the axis ...
