a little poem about swimming

Wrote this poem this morning when I awoke dreaming.... Goodbye to summer I woke dreaming On a quiet half-lit morning Washed in contentment Of the water I saw. Three-of-me swam across a calm green lake Toward the buoy where we were to turn And swim back In the sparkling sunshine. Coach-me and swimmin...

Re: Long swim with a front snorkel, breathing pattern

Beautiful thing, Adrian. Congratulations!

Great to test your limits and find you are capable of more than you would have expected.
I think it means you have trained yourself to a higher capacity of effort but your habit is still to say "stop" at an earlier point.

So cool.

Re: Long swim with a front snorkel, breathing pattern

Nice use of the snorkel to feel how to go a distance and swim relaxed. FYI -- Side kicking drills can help one to figure out how to rotate. Probably can't use the snorkel during them but but all the side kick drills (side kick, 6-1-6, 6-3-6) can get you to use the core muscles that keep you balanced...

finished 6 OW swims by 60th birthday

Tomorrow (Friday the 13th) is my 60th birthday...8^)...and I swam one lake for each decade this summer and had some nice family picnics on the shores of a couple of those lakes. I finished my 6th OW swim on Half-Moon Lake last month wanting to swim further next summer. I was tired, it was challengin...

Re: Hartford Women's Tri Race Report. Feeling Defeated

So understandable that being surrounded by aggressive swimmers would be daunting. Was the race monitored differently in previous years? I have just begun open water swimming this summer. "Compete with the finish line" is my main goal. Still...I am not comfortable when other swimmers pass m...

Re: Diana Nyad - Cuba to Florida - No Shark Cage

Wonderful accomplishment. Diana Nyad's swim is truly fascinating and inspiring. Her determination is great to hear about. If anything is going to be reported about her I perk up and ensure I get to see it. I am so proud of her and her team. Love what she said on the beach after she staggered out of ...

4 of 6 OW swims this summer

I remember thinking last fall that this website could offer me freestyle lessons but I would not be doing open water swimming. That is for triathletes or elite athletes I thought. Maybe so but I am doing it too and having a great time. The swims I am doing draw a range of swimmers. OW swims are beco...

Hi mp joyce, I took quite a while writing my reply to you yesterday. By the time I posted it you had decided to skip Big Shoulders this year. Ah well...8^)...computers are complicated. It sounds like a great swim at your coaches'. Very different to keep going for a long time. Seems like OW swimming ...

Re: Swimming Improvement/Should I try Big Shoulders 2.5K?

Hi mp joyce, I am turning 60 this year and started swimming 4-6 times a week 8 months ago. I did my first OW swim a couple of weeks ago and did not think I had a solid idea of whether I was ready. I decided my race was to finish and the worst I could do was ask to be pulled out. It was a 2.5K on Dia...

Re: first OW swim today

Thank you Annie. You are right, it was about air. I've not gotten comfortable enough with freestyle to trust a long swim to it. I could breathe and site reliably with the breast stroke. Seemed like my body made a decision for me -- 'do what works out here!'. So I do need plenty of practice with a wo...

Re: first OW swim today

The weather was chilly, cloudy and windy. I swam through whitecaps at times. the water felt warmer than I expected. It was 68F, 20C. There was no shock at all when I jumped in. I was comfortable, if not a bit warm at times. At one point, just after the turnaround buoy I stopped and loosened the neck...

first OW swim today

My new wetsuit and other gear are all packed up. I made an extra thermos of the same tea I drink after each practice. I'm even taking a big bowl of pesto pasta for the barbecue afterwards. The swim organizer said nobody had offered to bring food before, but bring it. I expect it will be eaten right ...

new wetsuit for first OW swim

My first OW swim is June 2nd and the officials recommend wetsuits because the water can be cold (65-72 degrees F, 18-22C depending on sunlight hours). So I bought one not wanting my strength to be sapped by cold water! It's a shorty-short sleeves and short legs. I recall saying about a month ago tha...

Re: open water swims -- how can I be ready?

Perhaps some day I will get a wetsuit. This year I am too new to the sport to justify getting one. Who knows though, I have changed so much since I started swimming this new crawl technique (new to me that is). I might bring a wetsuit into the mix to continue challenging myself. This coming summer (...

Re: Help!! Newbie conflicts!

There are different techniques out there. Sounds like you found one. One thing seems certain, you can't coach the coach. I would look for a coach who is familiar with the swim smooth technique. In fact I will be doing that later this spring. The SS book has been my coach so far and I don't want to g...

my event landmark

This is not a sighting landmark to use in an open water swim. It is a... it is MY distance landmark. I am now swimming a mile 4 times a week.. :!: I started adding one lap a week last November based on advice from Adam to get up to 2000m per swim. And now, BOOM, I am swimming a mile. That 2000m goal...

Re: Chlorine allergy

Here is an update on using vitamin c spray. I gave it a good long try (3 weeks of spraying my face and inhaling) and it does not work to fend off the sniffles from chlorine. My sniffles got much worse and would have stopped my swims if I hadn't tried a nose plug. It took a couple of weeks to get ove...
