Re: Catch up stroke

This morning at the pool i concentrated on shortening my stroke at back end.I rounded off my stroke at my hips(as suggested by im400) and "oh my god",what a difference it made to my speed and stroke count. For quite a few years I have struggled to up my stroke rate because I mistakenly beli...

Re: Catch up stroke

Good morning,I'm getting the impression from the posts online that we should by striving to emulate The Laure Manadou and Jodie Swallow style ie.very fast turnover with an immediate catch,as opposed to Rebecca Adlington and Ian Thorpe who appear to have a longer and more patient catch. Is this becaus...

Re: Catch up stroke

Good morning, thanks to all for their replies in regard to catch up stroke.I remember my one and only coaching session by a guy called Robin Brew about 18 years ago.The one point he stressed during the days coaching was the hand releasing pressure at the back of the stroke should take place only when...

Catch up stroke

Hi to all swimmers out there. Like many other swimmers looking to improve my freestyle technique I tend to study mr smooth and miss swinger quite regularly as a reminder of what it should look like to swim perfectly.I have noticed that mr smooth and miss swinger swim with a front quadrant stroke ( I...

Re: Freestyle catch

Would you guys be ok swimming in open water where having to keep raising your head for sighting is essential? :?:

Re: Freestyle catch

I must admit that whist trying (and mostly failing) to adopt swim smooths mantra of no pushing down at the front of the stroke my swimming has stalled and no progress made.trying to concentrate on this early verticle forearm catch has taken over my rhythm and caused Me to slow down. : After watching...

Re: Freestyle catch

Good morning sol,I suspect you are right about pushing down slightly at the front of the stroke is for sprinters who can sustain a furious leg kick and high arm turnover.I know when I try to do some 50 and 25 sprints I automatically push down at the front(not that I'm any Gary Hall!!) Maybe I need t...

Re: Freestyle catch

Thanks for your reply. Gary Hall says that a swimmer moves more quickly through air than water, therefore if by pushing down to create lift you would be higher in the water creating less resistance.i suspect that a swimmer of his calibre has a fantastic leg kick to compensate for any drag he may crea...

Freestyle catch

Hi,I was a little curious what your thoughts are on Gary Hall sr,s comments who recommends pushing down "to create lift"at the front of the stroke and then continuing with the stroke to push backwards. This view seems to contradict swim smooths view where pushing down is a no no.(causes le...

Re: Sun yang

I understand the point about earnings and to be honest yang doesn't need to risk his reputation in open water swims ,but I suppose if we had a runner who was unbeatable at cross country, would he beat everyone on the track? surely these are the type of races we all like to see.Why do these questions ...

Re: Sun yang

Hi,thanks for your thoughts on this subject.i am in no doubt whatsoever that technically Sun is the best distance swimmer in the world, but could he adapt his style to choppy sea conditions (not a smooth lake swim).wouldn't it be great to see how he performs against the tried and tested open water sw...

Re: Sun yang

I was thinking particularly about a sea swim,I doubt his catch would be as effective and would probably favour the "swingers",but as you say we will probably never know.

Sun yang

Hi,I was wondering for no particular reason whether Sun Yang's incredibly long smooth and efficient technique would give him the same results in an open water swim.I compete in tri events and I don' think i've seen any swimmer with Sun's stroke.
What do the expert think.?
Cheers,
Chris.

Re: Sprinter on "Neighbours"

Hi,Being new to swim smooth forum I've only just noticed "sprinter On neighbours".I immediately though you were referring to the guys in adjacent lanes who are compelled to race against everyone who appears to be a serious swimmer.I bet everybody knows The type.Bloody annoying at times! Ch...

Re: Over gliding

Good morning Don,Hope I've caught you before you go to your pool.I sense from your reply that you love swimming and at 77 years of age I think it 's important to keep active and still have goals to aim at(although the goalpost may shift a little from time to time). At 57 years of age I'm a comparati...

Over gliding

Hiya to all,I know this is one of swim smooth's favourite subjects, but one consideration that hasn't been mentioned as far as I know is that the over glider May be pausing during their stroke due to lack of fitness and simply cannot sustain a fast stroke rate.I would be interested hear any views on ...
