Re: The Catch (Maglischo)

Hi Don, This particular aspect of Maglischo's work, that is frame by frame analysis has pretty much been presented in a way which allows for various types to be described. What he does typically is to describe what he sees, trying to give scientific explanations about every phenomenon, and completi...

Re: What Do You Think Of Mr Smooth?

HI Swimsmooth primarily focuses on front crawl so no other versions of the other strokes i'm afraid. Also, the S-shaped arm stroke is a thing of the past also. See point 2 here: http://www.swimsmooth.com/contentious.html But I still see swimmers using the S-shaped. How about the boomerang-type flex...

Re: Butterfly

Last night, I tried the second kick after the arm is out of the water (after the pull) and during the breath. My body didn't comply. I simply couldn't do it without looking like I'm drowning. I guess I need some time to reprogram my body.

Re: What Do You Think Of Mr Smooth?

I'm not sure if anyone else said this, but I was looking for a Mr. Smooth version of the other three strokes. I'm working on the butterfly and I wanted a model. I resorted to YouTube videos instead. The only thing Mr. Smooth is missing is that he doesn't seem to employ the S-shaped arm sweep. But it...

The Catch (Maglischo)

Hi, I picked up Maglischo's thick book (Swimming Fastest) and read through the freestyle (front crawl) section. The section on The Catch has confused me to no end. He writes -- and I paraphrase -- that after the arm extension, you should start the downsweep to the Catch by sweeping down (without pul...

Re: Butterfly

Focal point, no negotiation here. Head must dive before hand enters. First kick must occur "after" hand entered. And then, where 99% of the people get it all wrong, 2nd kick must be delayed (patient) until hand exit. Breathe in must occur before that. But really Janus, it's important to k...

Re: Butterfly

Thanks for the response, SolarEnergy! I find your statement about the relevance of the second kick (the kick out of the water) depending on the event (50m vs. 200m) very eye-opening. I guess if I thought about it, I would've come to the same conclusion. After all, a freestyle swimmer in the 50m is k...

Re: Problem with swimming laps…. Advice needed

Vicky, I'd reiterate what a lot of other posters said about kicking and streamlining. I just started swimming again this past summer after a long absence and had to essentially "relearn" my strokes. What I found was that I could still get decent speed and plenty of exercise by kicking less...

Re: Introductions - Say Hello

Hi, I live in California. I swim almost every day (no Saturdays) and find swimming somewhat addictive. I do all the strokes. For freestyle, I've tried just about every technique and have comfortably settled on Richard Quick's "front quadrant" technique. I find I'm less tired and get really...

Butterfly

I'm a butterfly newbie. I have some questions on how best to perform the butterfly. I've practiced some and watched lots of butterflies on YouTube. Based on my research, I've discovered two divergent schools of thought (and I don't discount the possibility that there might be more than two): 1. Acco...
