Re: Cottmiler in Perth 2016

Hi Cottmiler, I did not mean absolute speed. It is true that speed will decrease naturally as we age but it depends very much on the starting point. As I have started swimming few years back, there is plenty of space for speed improvements even when age is going in the opposite direction. For me it...

Re: Nightcrawler's 2017 Season

I may not continue the lesson, my legs and joints have too much pain now, cant walk and climb stairs. He mustnt have focused on too much dry land exercise from the first day. I m not doing any dry land exercises i had told him before the lesson. On the other hand have no time to repeat those land e...

Re: video of me. please comment

Maybe its interesting to try these. If you dont finsh the stroke with keeping backward pressure to the end they will want to come off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on0AnlE71xo Eww, why's she sitting on a bed for that ??? Yet another swim instructor for me Wednesday, said he was watching to see i...

You can bet elites arms are doing as much as they can as efficiently as they can.

Re: Swimming lessons, what to focus on ?

Three lessons in with new instructor, good to have different input, improved my breaststroke kick and got me back to working on flip turns. At the end of the lesson he says "freestyle back, I'll time you, try for 30 seconds" i said bit faster, he says 25, I said 20 to 22 shouldn't be a pro...

Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

I just need to make sure I don't lift my head out of the water or turn my head too much to breathe as I did notice I was "looking at the stars on occasions during the side kick drill. To stop lifting my head I find I almost have to force the top of my head down as I rotate, the natural tendenc...

Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

With the value of hindsight I wouldn't buy any toy's. I'd use a snorkel once or twice to see how limited my swimming is due to breathing, then get on with laps resting as much as I need between. Hate kickboards, just kick on side one arm forward other back, swap each lap. P.S...I'm carrying bugger a...

Re: Swimming lessons, what to focus on ?

1500 metres 33 minutes, nearly at my revised goal of 30 minute 1500's.

I'm sure I could crack 30 by pushing a little harder but busting my nuts isn't the intention.

Re: Finding Bottom - Breathing

I am one of those adults who just never learned to swim. More or less. I can “swim fully under water - near surface”. The problem comes when I need to come up for a breath. Even in 4’ of water - I seem to struggle getting my feet on bottom. Obviously if over my head - I may go into panic mode. I re...

Re: please comment my stroke

When I watch Jono Van Hazel swimming relaxed at 60SPM (ie my stroke rate in those videos), not only I see a super still head, but it also seems that he hits the water with much more power and precision, as smootharnie points out. That's probably the main difference between fast and average swimmers...

Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

I won't say I'm unfit as I play squash regularly and just recently ran a 10k in 63mins but I ain't super fit either. Help please as I think I can crack this. You aint swim fit is the problem. I swam 25s with a reducing break time between them to get some swim fitness. Might not be the quickest way ...

Re: Swimming lessons, what to focus on ?

Not getting to the pool as often as I would like. Made it there yesterday 2 km's, various strokes, freestyle didn't feel great, had to focus on getting all my breath out to feel half right. Went again this morning 1.2 k's, easy as, felt great, stopped only because I've got a lot to get through toda...

Re: Ideal body fat percentage for a swimmer

Hi I was just wondering what is the ideal fat percentage range for a) an athlete swimmer and b) a fitness swimmer? I weighed myself this morning and the scale showed me that I am 79kg in weight with a body fat percentage of 22.5% and I was wondering, if I reduce my fat% somewhat, would it help me s...

Re: Dart 10k - job done!

Woody said I came to swimming late at 57 and any coaching has been done by much younger people who got their confidence and ability to hold a body position when they were very young. They had young minds and got the feel for the water much easier than an adult.Hence what seems easy to them was a st...

Re: Scared of the deep part of the pool

So, today the coach asked us to jump into the deep part of the pool while she was there to make us feel safe, help when needed. Although she was right there and there's no risk of jumping at all, but I freaked out. I was so scared. I'm no longer scared in the shallow part of the pool where my legs ...

Re: Front Crawl Endurance (Beginner)

Sounds like you need some muscle adaption. I'm 72kg 178cm on rare occasions I get a bit of shoulder soreness around 200 metres but that goes in the next 50 or so metres. Still at 51 I think that's more general age related tightness. You don't mention swim speed, maybe you're going too hard, probably...

Mack appears to me to get a good long breath in to ?
The Bronte sisters had been working on short breaths in recent times, although that may have just been for the sprint to the end.
