Re: How to counter frustration

Well, here I am a year later and still unable to swim more than 50 metres! I will post some videos and would appreciate any feedback on my inability to swim more than 50 metres at a time. http://youtu.be/rZA_iQxRtco http://youtu.be/bcr9Kcwwb5M There are other videos but these are reasonably represen...

Re: Improve my freestyle swimming

Caution! I am not any better a swimmer than you although I've read and watched a lot and am a good observer. I would suggest that you pull too early: your recovering arm should be coming past your head before you pull. Similarly, your lead arm drops when you're breathing before the recovering arm co...

Re: How to counter frustration

I'm still working away most days but without any breakthrough as yet. Solarenergy has pointed out that I am not rotating my lower body and has suggested a drill to try and correct that.

Re: How to counter frustration

slow down, do the breathing, do the arm mechnicas drills with pull, get more solid rotation, work on balance improvement, get upper body endurance with the pull, diminish size of pull, build some kicking endurance, integrate kick in stroke. Thanks. However, can you explain what you mean by "ba...

Re: How to counter frustration

I hope you dug out the Bambino stroke improvement guide you were given & read it cover to cover! I wish you all the best for 2014, the year in which you learn to swim freestyle comfortably. (As I will). Kind regards, Kate I now have the Bambino guide and the SS book and am reading them both avi...

Re: How to counter frustration

I've been advised that I'm rotating from the waist upwards and not rotating my whole body. I read that kick timing can assist or hinder the rotation: should I concentrate my thinking on rotating my hips (it seems the upper body must almost certainly then follow?), or do I need to investigate/review ...

Re: How to counter frustration

I dont understand all the legs sinking and head lifting you seem to do. Can you give an idea about your basic balance and buoyancy? - Buoyancy: Full lungs(press all the air in that you can). Float in vertical position (like a fishing float) look straight ahead. Where is the water level?(eye level, ...

Re: How to counter frustration

Smootharnie, as you'll know from a previous post of mine, I know that relaxation and exhalation are key to me making progress. However, I'm also following the advice in the SS book for bambino style swimmers, viz. to do dog-paddle and sculling drills as well. Focusing only on sink-downs (what I did ...

Re: How to counter frustration

You guys have been very helpful and asked me to report progress, so here goes. This week I tried doggy paddle and sculling drills (both with a pull buoy) as well as sink-downs in the 2m deep-end. This was the first time I'd done sink-downs out of my depth and the first one was a bit nervy, but gradu...

Use of PMs

Sorry to ask a Forum use question, but I'm confused by PMs. When I prepare and send a PM, I click Submit and it says "Sent" but then the message still appears to be in my outbox, even some hours later. Can someone explain the mechanics of PMs please?

Re: How to counter frustration

Thanks, Smootharnie. As it happens, I was aware of them before (about 2006 I did some research when I first started feeling frustrated!). One previous coach also taught me using AT methods (emphasis on keeping a long neck and letting your head be supported by the water comes to mind). Was there a sp...

Re: How to counter frustration

For what it's worth a new video has been uploaded showing my latest effort- only trying to take on board forum comments and my own observation of earlier videos and not help I may get from Solarenergy and others.. Same Youtube URL as given before in this thread.

Re: How to counter frustration

Annie, many thanks for this detailed post. I've PM'd you as requested. I do not have the SS book and will order it on return to UK. I have not been following Bambino actions as I didn't realise that was what was in it! I thought it was just a description of the swim type characteristics. I hope I st...

Re: How to counter frustration

Latest news: today I swam 2 consecutive 25m lengths on 3 separate occasions - not much, but progress! I'm now convinced (thanks to all your help and my own analysis) that my main issues are not being relaxed enough (I find that very tough) and not exhaling enough. I will update you with developments.
