Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

I almost forgot the drill! I would like to emphasise that it is a suggestion that I made to her, and may not work for other people. I just felt that it might help her. Other people may disagree with it. I suggested her to use the gutter on the side walls to help her feel comfortable breathing on the...

Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

She lifts the head up to breathe, more or less like she does in breaststroke. Her breaststroke is by the way technically quite nice, with a streamlined stroke, and horizontal body position when kicking. Even with some undulation in the stroke. Those who thinks that I compliment her here are not comp...

Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

Just curious about the exercise you suggested to your wife, is it the side drills? Well, not exactly. I had previously suggested that she does some one arm drills (one arm leading, the other along the thigh, and kicking), but she could not go the next step of crawling with one arm only (not to ment...

Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

Progression is motivating. Keeping going! I think that everyone would agree that proper breathing is one big factor in swimming well. Many learners cannot breathe properly, not only because they are fighting to get their mouth out of the water, but also because they feel stress, they believe that th...

Re: Nightcrawler's 2017 Season

Hey smootharnie, my answers below with bold. So you only value the opinion of swimmers faster than you? Yes, definitely. If Phelps and all the other olympic swimmers used the same reasoning, where would they go for a second opinion or coaching? Phelps was already swimming faster than me while he wa...

Re: Breaststroke with arm propulsion?

I would like to ask if elite breaststrokers were to do this assuming the rules does not exists, will they thus swim faster than the conventional pull Maybe. If there are reliable data demonstrating that one is faster than the other, that is the answer you are looking for. I do not have them. Perhap...

Re: 2-beat kick position and drag

It's not so much that I have a problem with the two-beat kick (my heels do surface - though intermittently rather than every beat), it's just that as streamlining is such a big thing (water being 800 times denser than air and so on) and the 'separated-foot' position looks so non-aerodynamic. I'm su...

Re: Breaststroke with arm propulsion?

I usually do longer distance swims like 1500 meters taking about 13 strokes per length (50m) and total time of below 30minutes. For a 50m swim alone, a time of 45 seconds should be achievable. Congratulations for your pace. It is truly remarkable. Also, if you can swim 1500 m in less than 30 min. (...

Re: Breaststroke with arm propulsion?

I realised that I have been swimming breaststroke in a way such that my arms provides a fair amount of propulsion in the stroke. Everything except the arm movements is the same. Instead of the regular pull where it forces the upper body to move vertically, my pull is more towards a horizontal actio...

Re: New device lets swimmers visually monitor pace & intervals

You know what I'd like for open water? A device where you could lock your bearing, then it would flash on the left or right if you start drifting off course. A sort of virtual "black line". I'd especially like it if it was hidden in your goggles so you could use it in a race without anyon...

First of all, I would like to express my sincere respect for creating a device, whatever it may be, whose purpose is to improve performance, enhance pleasure in practicing a sport, or facilitating training thereof. My personal opinion seconds those of preceding posters. Mike A summarised it in a bet...

Re: Breathing Issues, drills and progression

Congratulations! You will be competing with the Olympians soon... hopefully!!! I have respect for your determination. Learning swimming may be quite ungrateful, especially in the beginning and by self-teaching. I hope that you make progress quickly. How many laps can you swim without rest, so far? W...

Re: Pace Descriptors, again! :)

If you want to gain pace, I recommend you to read carefully and understand the USRPT format. This is a training format discovered by Prof. Dr. Brent Rushall, it has been used for 30+ years, based on only scientific research and proven by many olympic swimmers: http://coachsci.sdsu.edu/swim/bullets/...

Like you and others have already written it, I would not worry too much about it yet. There are many other points to look after. Besides, you have joined/found a SwimSmooth squad and seems to be happy with that. I am sure that your coach will show you how to improve effectively. Keep going and posti...
