It's just the wetsuit rubbing on your neck causing it, I get it from my swim suit too, at the base of my neck. Have you tried using a silicon based roll on gel\goo? It means your wetsuit can glide over your skin rather than sticking to it and irritating it.

I did use a sony walkman waterproof mp3 player. It was great in the gym as I had no wires trailing, but once I got in the water, after a couple of lengths the water got in between the ear buds and my ear drum and I couldn't hear a thing.
