Slow Stroke Rate

Postby triekc » Mon Nov 11, 2013 3:30 pm

I swim ~2 minute 100M, ~28 minute 1500m, and my average stroke rate is 11 a length, 24/minute - obviously I am not an exceptional fast swimmer, but I can readily complete a 1500m up to 3000m swim. The chart says the sweet spot is 50-60/minute for a 2 minute 100M swim pace! That seems so high! Why would I want to exert energy to double my turn over to swim same pace? My efforts to increase my turn over do not result in measurable, sustainable lower 100m times, only loss of any correct form I may have and exhaustion. What is the prescription for a slow swimmer / low stroke rate like me? I have metronome, I set it at .90- .95 normally, so to achieve 50 strokes a minutes, I would need to decrease metronome to ~.50 I assume ...

No not at all, 50spm = 1.2, 60spm = 1.0

.95 = about 63spm

Thanks for reply, i followed your lead and broke out my calculator and put a little more thought into this, and learned that my current strokes per 100 meters is 48, which makes much more sense than what i believed earlier. And that my current stroke-second is about 1.2, which is much slower than i believed, i thought i was turning over at least at 1 stroke per second, my goal now will be to try to increase rate to 1 stroke per 1.10 or 1.15 seconds, which should move me into the 50s S/M, hopefully i can maintain my reasonably good form

2 min 100m, but 28 min 1500m? Something strange there! A 28 min 1500m implies an average of 1 min 52 sec per 100m.
